2013 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup wins Truck of Texas award

Bilde

The 2013 Ram 1500 pickup won the coveted "Truck of Texas" award at the 20th annual Texas Auto Writers Association's Texas Truck Rodeo on Monday.

The award is highly sought after by automakers because Texas is the largest pickup market in the U.S. Some pickups are even designed with the tastes and preferences of Texas ranchers in mind.

"Texas is Ram's biggest market, and we've worked relentlessly to build powerful trucks with best-in-class fuel economy and capability for our customers," Fred Diaz, CEO of the Ram truck brand said in a statement. "The pickup market is fiercely competitive and we are proud the Texas Auto Writers have awarded Ram trucks with these coveted titles."

The 2013 Ram Laramie Longhorn model also was awarded "Luxury Pickup Truck of Texas" and full-size "Pickup Truck of Texas." The Jeep Grand Cherokee was named "Sport Utility Texas."

Production of the upgraded 2013 Ram 1500-- which has a new engine, transmission and an optional stop-start system -- began in September, giving Chrysler the newest pickup model on the road. The Ram 1500 lineup also has an updated front grille and an upgraded interior.

"You've got to love how tough, capable, comfortable and fuel efficient this new truck is, especially for Texans who frequently drive long distances," Michael Herzing, Texas Auto Writers Association president, said in a statement.

The event, held in San Antonio, is judged by 50 journalists over two days of on- and off-road vehicle evaluation.

Chrysler is hoping that the new pickup will help the Ram brand gain market share while Ford and Chevrolet are developing their next generation of pickups.

Ram's share of the U.S. full-size pickup market has increased from 14.6% in 2010 to 16.2% in 2011. Through September, Ram held a 18.4% share.

On Monday, General Motors said it will reveal its 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups on Dec. 13. The 2014 Silverado and Sierra are expected to hit showrooms sometime in 2013, but GM has not yet revealed specific timing. An all-new Ford F-150 is expected by 2015, according to Merrill Lynch analysts.

Ford also left Texas with several awards from the Texas Auto Writers Association. They are:

• Best heavy-duty pickup: 2013 Ford F-250 Super Duty

• Best off-road pickup: F-150 SVT Raptor

• Best compact SUV: Ford Escape

• Best midsize luxury SUV: Ford Explorer Sport

Rare Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible To Cross Auction Block

Plymouth_f34_ns_101512_717

One of the most desirable Mopar muscle cars ever built, a rare 1971 FC7-In Violet Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible — the only one of its color to roll off the line in 1971 — will cross the Barrett-Jackson auction block here in January.

While Barrett-Jackson's policy is to refrain from releasing its reserve, another 1971 Hemi 'Cuda Convertible sold at a different 2007 auction for $2.2 million, which was said to be $1 million less than what RM Auctions was expecting.

The 1971 FC7-In Violet Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible, best-known for its "Plum Crazy" color, was rediscovered on New Year's Eve in 2001 by long-time Hemi 'Cuda Convertible hunter Harold Sullivan, after the car was stolen nearly 30 years prior. It was buried in weeds and underbrush and only five days away from disappearing into a scrap-recycling yard.

After a two-year restoration by Cummins Restoration in Grand Haven, Michigan, the Hemi 'Cuda was completed by Ted Mazurek at Sullivan's shop in Madison Heights, Michigan. It was inspected, authenticated and appraised to museum standards by Mopar guru Galen Govier after its restoration. Its authenticity paid off when it took top honors at the 2005 Meadowbrook Concours d'Elegance in Rochester, Michigan.

Gearheads will get a kick out of knowing it contains the last factory-assembled 426cid Hemi V8 engine, with two four-barrel carburetors, 727 automatic transmission, Super Track Pak package with Dana 60 rear end, 4.11 ratio gears and a power convertible top. This also was the only model year the 'Cuda sported four headlights and fender "gills."

"It is a true automotive milestone and an extraordinary example of 'American Muscle' at its finest," said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, in a statement, who personally owns a 1970 version of the car.

Of the 11 Hemi 'Cuda Convertibles ever built, this is one of only two convertibles made for export to Canada. There it was featured in Canadian Hot Rods and on the October 2011 cover of Mopar Action. Seven of the remainders went to U.S. buyers and two were exported to England.

Edmunds says: History and rarity undoubtedly will come at a price.

The All-New Dodge Dart 'Likes' Social Media

Img-20120919-00013

The Dodge Dart is driving people to connect, learn and discover the all-new compact car through social media.

Whether posting to Facebook, engaging our followers on twitter, or photosharing, Dodge is building awareness through several social media channels.

Recently, hundreds of Chrysler Group employees engaged in the Dodge Dart Ride & Drive. The event gave the people behind the Dodge Dart a chance to drive the all-new compact car.

Employees also took photos with the new Dodge GRC Rallycross race car and driver Travis Pastrana through “Social Booth.” It works like a photo booth, but also gives employees a convenient way to post the pictures to Facebook, Twitter or email. The booth ran non-stop for four hours, taking photos of more than 450 fans with Pastrana. It broke Social Booth’s own record of number of pictures taken per hour.

This cool tool allowed more than 155,000 people to see pictures of a friend with a Rallycross champion and a Dodge Dart. That’s a lot of traffic!

Each picture tweeted or posted on Facebook automatically came with the message: “Like” Dodge @facebook.com/dodge.

Now, Dodge is giving Pinterest users a chance to pin their way to win a brand new Dodge Dart. Dodge has partnered with Real Simple Magazine to create the “Driven by Design” Sweepstakes.

The contest encourages readers to create a pin board on Pinterest showcasing their “Dream Garage,” which will house a Dodge Dart.

Participants will first customize a Dart and post it to their Pinterest page, then ask friends to vote for their design.

The person with the most votes wins the Dodge Dart.

Submit your Pinterest board to the contest entry page on realsimple.com. Voting is Oct. 3 – 30.

More proof that the power of social media can really pay off!

Pastrana goes all in at Las Vegas

10

Travis Pastrana may not have gotten the result he was looking for with his Dodge Dart in Round 5 of the Global RallyCross Championship at Las Vegas, but he still gave his fans the fabulous show they’ve come to expect.

Pastrana came into the weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a full plate, competing in his first NASCAR truck race as well as the Global RallyCross event.  Running second in Heat 3 of the Global RallyCross in his Discount Tire Dart and challenging for the lead, he committed a rare mental lapse, taking the joker shortcut two laps in a row, a course violation.

“I completely blew it,” he said, as the resulting 30-second penalty dropped Pastrana to fourth place in the heat and forced him into the Last Chance Qualifier.

Pastrana finished fourth in the Last Chance heat, racing his way into the main event in style.  There, running third behind second-place Brian Deegan and eventual winner Tanner Faust, he was chasing down the two leaders when, suddenly, the Dart silently coasted to a stop. In running all out to catch Faust, Pastrana explained, “I tried to turn it up a little bit and ended up blowing a turbo.”

With an overall win at New Hampshire and 30 points on the board, Pastrana goes to the season finale in fifth place. The Global RallyCross Championship will close out the 2012 season in Las Vegas on October 30 with an encore event held in conjunction with SEMA show, the automotive performance industry’s giant trade convention.  A special course will be constructed on the grounds of the Las Vegas Convention Center across the street from the main hall.
