How Much Can I Tow?

Summer is the perfect time to hitch up your 5th wheel or camping trailer and head to the mountains for a reprieve. Our trucks and SUV’s are the ultimate work-horse to getting us there, but its important to make sure your vehicle isn’t operating over its recommended tow weight. Melloy Dodge values our customers and their need for adventure, so our experts want you to make informed decisions that are going to keep your truck or SUV in proper working order.
1-     Know Your Tongue Weight: Tongue weight is the weight of the trailer hooked onto your ball hitch and should not exceed 10-15% of the total trailer’s weight. For example, a trailer weighing 10,000 lbs should not exert more than 1,000 to 1,500 pounds of pressure on your tongue.
2-     Manufacturer’s Recommendation: When you purchase a RAM or Dodge equipped with towing capacities, you will be informed of max towing weight for your towing needs. It’s best to come with your trailer’s manufacturer listed weight so we can provide you with a vehicle that matches or beats the weight of your trailer.
3-     Maximum Tow Capacity: This is the maximum weight your vehicle can tow. You should never exceed your manufacturer’s recommended towing capacity because it can lead to dangerous outcomes.
4-     Tire Pressure: Your vehicle’s tire pressure should never exceed the recommended PSI on the sidewall of your tire. For more towing tire pressure concerns, please consult your operator's manual and the towing sticker on your driver’s door.

Why is changing your oil so important? Oil serves a few important purposes, one of which is being a lubricant for your engine.  Oil is also used to clean your engine by trapping debris and transporting it to your oil filter. Oil is responsible for keeping the bottom portion of your engine cool by reducing the amount of friction between the moving parts that create additional heat.  Motor Oil keeps your vehicle in efficient working order, and protects against costly repairs of wear and tear on your engine.

Our technicians suggest looking in your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s oil change mileage recommendation. Oil changes typically take place every 5,000 to 7,000 miles or every six months.  Newer model vehicles are equipped with an alert system that notifies you when it’s time to change your oil. Sometimes the
