Maintaining Your Vehicle's MPG

With gas prices on the rise and local restrictions starting to loosen, the travel itch that you’ve been fighting for a year may not be too far from your future! Melloy Dodge offers a range of vehicles, each has its own city and highway miles per gallon (MPG) that each is designed to reach.* Occasionally, you may notice that you are filling up sooner than you typically do, so our Express Lane Technicians have some suggestions for you:. 

Extra Weight: have you recently cleaned out and organized rooms in your house and taken several bags to your trunk? Maybe it’s the kid's backpacks, sporting equipment, new weights for your home gym, a bike rack that isn't being used, or even a cargo box on top. This extra weight will affect how efficient your vehicle is. Be sure to clear out any extra and unnecessary weight from your vehicle. 

Idling: Do trips in your vehicle, local or long distance, include times or waiting long periods in your car and you leave it idling? Unless you have a newer model vehicle that has the start-stop function it’ll save you money by just switching the vehicle off. 

Maintain Your Speed: Getting up to speed is fine, but continuously switching between higher and lower speed limits will burn a lot more fuel than you may think. Use cruise control when possible and remember that manufacturers typically recommend that you don’t use it below 25 mph so that your vehicle doesn't change unnecessarily between gears.

Tire Pressure: Our previous blog from our own Melloy Dodge technicians has covered the importance of maintaining and checking your tire pressure. Tire pressure that is routinely set to the tire and manufacturers recommend PSI can increase your fuel economy upwards of 3%!
