When and When Not to Use 4-Wheel Drive

Since winter has hit New Mexico, 4-wheel drive can be especially helpful. Although it may seem useful in many situations, there are scenarios where 4-wheel drive should not be used. The experts at Melloy Dodge in Albuquerque are here to set the record straight on using 4-wheel drive.

4-wheel drive is the capability of a vehicle to provide torque to all four tires simultaneously. There are times when 4WD is useful and times when you should not use it. It is crucial to know the difference, as it may negatively impact your vehicle if used incorrectly. Here are a few situations where 4x4 is needed and when you should avoid using it.

4WD comes in two settings, high and low. High is most useful when driving on rough terrain. 4WD high is designed for higher speeds (usually no more than 55 mph) and less traction. Low is best used in inclement weather with serious snow or mud. 4WD low is designed for lower speeds (usually 10 mph) and situations where you need maximum traction. If you are driving on flat, smooth, and dry roads, it’s advised not to use 4WD, as it can actually damage your vehicle. Be cautious when turning while in 4WD so the vehicle doesn’t “crab” and your control of the vehicle is reduced. As always, read and follow your manufacturer’s instruction manual and follow the maintenance instructions of a 4WD vehicle.

As you can see, 4-wheel drive has more to understand than one may think. Whether you are driving on a snowy day or off-roading in the mountains, it is important to recognize when you should be using this feature and how to use it.
