Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winter driving can be difficult in certain areas of New Mexico. Winter weather conditions, such as snow and icy roads, can make for an intimidating drive. The team at Melloy Dodge in Albuquerque is here with a few tips to ensure your safety on your next Winter excursion.
  • Plan Ahead- If you know you will be traveling in areas subject to poor weather conditions, check online before setting out. Make sure there are not any weather warnings or road closures due to weather.
  • Slow Down- Don’t drive at excessive speeds. During Winter, roads can be icy, making it harder to slow down once you’ve accelerated.
  • Give Yourself Space- It’s a good rule of thumb to always leave a car length between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. In Winter, give yourself additional space in case of any black ice.
  • Take it Slow- Do not accelerate or decelerate too quickly. This can be especially hazardous on slippery or icy roads.
  • Check Your Tires- Make sure your tires are filled with air and have the correct tire pressure. The cold can cause tires to leak, so keeping them filled will help ensure your safety.
  • Be Ready for an Emergency- It’s always a great idea to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. These kits should include blankets, jumper cables, tools, a flashlight, a first aid kit, a phone charger, water, and nonperishable food.
  • Get your Vehicle Checked- We urge our customers to check their vehicles before a long road trip. If you plan to drive a long distance, especially in Winter, get your vehicle inspected before you hit the road. Ask the technician to check the battery, heating and cooling system, brakes, and wiper blades.
When driving in inclement weather, it’s important always to be prepared. Call or stop by the Service Department at Melloy Dodge to ensure you and your loved ones are safe, and your Vehicle is Winter ready. Our team of experts is here to help!
