What is Antifreeze, Anyway?

Most people know that antifreeze is one of your vehicle's many fluids, but some people do not know what it’s used for and how it works. Melloy Dodge spoke with one of our knowledgeable Express Lane Technicians and he broke down what every car owner should know about antifreeze.

Antifreeze is a bright-colored liquid that can come in many different colors, such as blue, green, pink, and orange, and is made of either ethylene glycol or propylene glycol and water. Antifreeze helps regulate the engine temperature. It is typically added into the radiator and then it is pumped from the radiator by a water pump into the engine to remove combustion-generated heat and goes to the heater core which helps supply heat to the interior of your vehicle's cabin. The antifreeze is then returned to the radiator when it ensures that excess heat is removed. This cycle continues while the vehicle engine is on!

Since antifreeze was formulated to help reduce overheating and to help regulate your engine’s temperature, it’s important to make sure your vehicle has enough to maintain its excessive heat-removing job. Without enough antifreeze, damage can occur to:

  • The engine
  • Head gaskets
  • Engine cylinders
  • Water pump
  • Connector rods

When your vehicle is brought to our Express Lane for its regularly scheduled maintenance, our technicians ensure that all liquid levels within your vehicle are at adequate levels before you leave. You can also view our multi-point checklist which goes over everything we checked while servicing your vehicle. To have your vehicle maintenance at the Express Lane, simply drop it off and then our courtesy shuttle can take you home and pick you up when it’s ready!
