Tips for Safer Spring Driving

The signs of Spring are here, which can mean changing driving conditions. Here’s a list of helpful tips from Melloy Dodge to keep you safe and help you prepare for spring's driving challenges.

  • Perform automotive maintenance. Spring is the perfect time to visit the Melloy Dodge Service Department. Talk with your service advisor about checking your vehicle’s fluid levels, tire pressure, suspension system and brakes which can help reduce your risk of a breakdown.
  • Watch for the Orange Barrels. As the weather warms, road construction often begins. Slow down and be alert for construction workers and slower traffic near work zones.
  • Watch for pedestrians. As the weather improves, expect more pedestrians, especially in residential and recreational areas. Be especially vigilant near parks and school zones.
  • Be Alert for Motorcycles. Motorcyclists are back on the roads in spring. Watch for motorcycles at intersections and in your blind spots when passing or merging.
  • Watch for Bicyclists. Warm weather usually brings more bicyclists out, so share the road. Those on bikes have the same rights as other vehicles on most roads.
  • Animals may be present. Spring may mean mating season for wildlife, bringing them closer to highways than normal. Be alert for deer, raccoons, skunks and other wildlife, as well as domesticated pets. Slow down so you can stop safely when animals are near the road.
  • Changing weather. In New Mexico, dust storms in the spring can reduce visibility. Spring winds can cause numerous tumbleweeds to cross the roads. Be cautious when driving when our weather presents these concerns.
  • Travel safely. If you’ll be traveling long distances during spring break or an upcoming vacation, take turns driving to avoid fatigue. If you ever feel sleepy behind the wheel, pull over for a brief nap or a brisk walk. Never drive when you are drowsy.
