The Ultimate Accident Checklist

You’re headed down the road and a distracted driver rear-ends you. Sound familiar? The staff at Melloy Dodge knows what you’re going through, so we’re offering these helpful tips in case you’re involved in an accident. An accident happens while commuting to work or just going to the grocery store. It's never a pleasant experience and can result in high emotions and confusion. However, it's important to remember that there are certain steps that you must follow after an accident. Here is a checklist to help you get what you need for insurance and possible lawsuits.

  • Make Sure No One is Injured – Immediately after an accident, ensure that you and anyone else in the car and the other driver(s) are not injured. Stay calm to maintain control of the situation.
  • Pull Over to the Side of the Road – If the cars involved in an accident are still drivable, it's best to move to the side of the road or a nearby parking lot. Use your hazard lights to signal other drivers of the issue.
  • Call the Police – Call the authorities so they can properly file a police report. Stick to the facts when giving your account of what happened. Don't forget to take note of the officer's name and badge number who is assisting you and be sure to request a copy of the filed report.
  • Exchange Information – While waiting for the police to arrive, exchange information with the other driver: swap insurance, driver's license, plate, name, address, and phone number.
  • Gather Additional Accident Evidence – Take pictures of the damage to all vehicles involved and record videos of the scene. Collect details on makes and models and gather information from any witnesses present. Consider including road signs or other landmarks that could help in an insurance claim.
  • Document the Occurrence – Write down everything that happened on paper, including the location, date, and time. This can be done after the police report and information exchange is completed.
  • Contact Your Insurance Agency – Call your insurance company immediately to report the accident. It is part of your policy to do so promptly, and you can use this time to gather information to file a claim.

The outcome of an accident will rely on the determination of fault by insurance companies and the actions of the involved drivers in filing claims. If no one accepts responsibility, it may lead to an inquiry and potential legal action. Adhering to these guidelines will put you in a good position for the following stages of the accident process. We aim for you to leave Melloy Dodge in your new car feeling secure and ready in case of an unfortunate event.
