Pastrana goes all in at Las Vegas

Travis Pastrana may not have gotten the result he was looking for with his Dodge Dart in Round 5 of the Global RallyCross Championship at Las Vegas, but he still gave his fans the fabulous show they’ve come to expect.

Pastrana came into the weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a full plate, competing in his first NASCAR truck race as well as the Global RallyCross event.  Running second in Heat 3 of the Global RallyCross in his Discount Tire Dart and challenging for the lead, he committed a rare mental lapse, taking the joker shortcut two laps in a row, a course violation.

“I completely blew it,” he said, as the resulting 30-second penalty dropped Pastrana to fourth place in the heat and forced him into the Last Chance Qualifier.

Pastrana finished fourth in the Last Chance heat, racing his way into the main event in style.  There, running third behind second-place Brian Deegan and eventual winner Tanner Faust, he was chasing down the two leaders when, suddenly, the Dart silently coasted to a stop. In running all out to catch Faust, Pastrana explained, “I tried to turn it up a little bit and ended up blowing a turbo.”

With an overall win at New Hampshire and 30 points on the board, Pastrana goes to the season finale in fifth place. The Global RallyCross Championship will close out the 2012 season in Las Vegas on October 30 with an encore event held in conjunction with SEMA show, the automotive performance industry’s giant trade convention.  A special course will be constructed on the grounds of the Las Vegas Convention Center across the street from the main hall.
